Michael Lamarche grew up in and around Cape Ann and currently  lives and works in Gloucester Massachusetts. He has earned his BFA at Goddard College in Socially Engaged Arts, a degree track which supports artists in the creation of work that engages with their local community.  Since graduating, Michael has grounded himself in an interest in work which dismantles the classist barriers that the world of art can tend to hold up. One such way of manifesting this interest is in Lamarche’s creation, Scribble. A local art cooperative which presents quarterly shows at MAGMA in Gloucester, Massachusetts, Scribble practices cooperative methods of art creation, presentation and revenue management. Unique to the Gloucester area, Scribble is a multi-modal art cooperative celebrating performance art, installation art, video art, theater and visual art and their intersecting genres all in one show. As a mixed media artist, Lamarche is often switching between mediums to meet the need of the project. With respect to his video work, Lamarche seeks to use himself as the subject of experimentation. He examines an activity deeply and measures his mental wellbeing before and after his exploration. As seen in his senior study titled Resistance and Art: Preventative Strategies for Anxiety in a Capitalist Society, the general thread Lamarche has been following is in response to a question of whether or not daily activities (often overlooked ones) might act as a remedy to his anxiety disorders. In a sense, these works and accompanying essays act as a mental-wellbeing blueprint, laid unfolded for all to read in the midst of our modern climate.
